“氣韻展”將從自由主義一個全新的角度重新審視中國抽象藝術。在藝術史上有兩種
精英形式的自由主義，一種是中國古代的“氣韻”學說，一種是格林伯格（Clement
Greenberg）的“前衛”理論，兩種完全不同的歷史語境中產生的藝術自由主義構成
了我們討論中國抽象藝術的思想史依據。中國這一代抽象主義也正是在認同自由主
義價值訴求和精英立場的同時，在母語文化中尋找精神資源，重新確定對“藝術自
由”的內省性的精神理解和風格取向，我們可以把這種藝術傾向稱為“氣韻”的新歷
史，它是中國當代藝術史中一種建立自己的歷史身份的嘗試。
此次展覽集中大陸和紐約的八位資深中國抽象藝術家李華生、林延、劉子健、邱
世華、沈忱、王川、楊識宏、周力的二十餘件作品，他們大多都有東西方兩種文化
實踐的經驗，他們將抽象藝術作為一種視覺語言，試圖在對兩種文化問題的反思中
尋找個人化表達的能力。

The “Qi Yun” exhibition reexamines Chinese abstract art from the
brand-new perspective of liberalism. There are two elitist forms of
liberalism in the history of arts. One is the “Qi Yun” theories in
ancient China, and the other is Clement Greenberg’s “avant-garde”
theory. These two liberalist theories of art in completely different
historical contexts constitute the foundation of our discussion of the
history of Chinese abstract art. The new abstract painting in China
features the search for spiritual resources in the indigenous culture
while identifying with the liberalist values and elitism and the
re-comprehension of the introspective spirit and style of “artistic
freedom”. We refer to this tendency as the new history of “Qi Yun”. It
is an attempt to establish our own historical identity in contemporary
Chinese artistic history.
<>This exhibition presents 20 pieces of works of the 8 well-known
Chinese abstract artists in Mainland China and New York, i.e. Li
Huasheng, Lin Yan, Liu Zijian, Qiu Shihua, Chen Chen, Wang Chuan, Yang
Shihong, and Zhou Li. Most of them have experienced both the Western and
the Eastern cultures. They take up abstract art as a visual language and
search for original expression in the reflection over the two cultures.
