“It is my dream to create a completely original Chinese series.” ----- Zhang Tian Xiao
Developing the concept from the year of 2000,<Shaolin Wuzang >was completed in 2006. The series was broadcasted that year in France where it stirred things up, creating one of the highest viewer rates thus far. Now it’s played on CCTV-Kids & CCTV-1. This Gongfu series is set in Shaolin Temple, around the Chinese original creation. Chinese and French scenarists worked together to write the script. The image design and drawing style are influenced by Chinese traditional technique and the settings spread throughout various scenic spots in China. While the series is filled with Chinese knighthood and Buddhism, it still maintains modern aesthetic values at the same time. A Disney executive stated: “I am very pleased to see an animation of eastern style worthy of the big screen that doesn’t imitate the Japanese style.”
Zhang Tian Xiao, formerly the animation director of Shanghai TV Station and deputy factory manager, went to France to study in Goblins, l’Ecole de l’Image in 1989. Among the series that he directed there are: 〈Rabbit Feifei〉、〈Leo & Popi,〉〈Jack Palmer〉,〈Momie au Pair〉, 〈Martin Morning 〉and 〈Shaolin Wuzang〉.
He currently is the General Manager and General Artistic supervisor of Shanghai Fantasia Animation. He also is the Executive council member on the Committee of Cartoon Arts of China TV Artists Association & China Animation Association; in addition he is a Member of the Experts Committee of Cartoon Industry Development of the Ministry of Culture.
