BREATHE- Application Form
Introduction to the residency scheme
Chinese Arts Centre is committed to developing creative opportunities for artists of Chinese descent. Chinese Arts Centre’s approach to working with artists is characterised by a commitment to providing support, stimulus and encouraging risk-taking. The process of making is considered as important as exhibiting.
The Breathe residency is an opportunity to provide an artist the time and space to contemplate their practise. It is not necessary that the artist makes finished work during this period and Chinese Arts Centre will not pressure the artist to do this. The time could be used for research and development of ideas, and the form the residency takes is entirely up to the artist to choose. We do however expect the artist to make productive use of their time whilst at Chinese Arts Centre and pro-actively engage with their environment. Opportunities to network, both inside and outside Chinese Art Centre, will be provided and through these the artist can promote themselves and their residency. The Open studio at the close of the residency will be an opportunity for the artist to engage with the public and discuss their residency. The format of the Open Studio can take the form of a professionally hung exhibition, an artist’s talk or simply a presentation of works in progress. This would be of the artist’s choosing and would reflect their experiences during the residency.
Back ground to Chinese Arts Centre
First established in 1986, Chinese Arts Centre has a recognised history as the UK agency for the development and promotion of Chinese arts and culture. Chinese Arts Centre acts as a broker, forging relationships between venues and artists. This agency technique has been successfully applied in work with local authorities, museums including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, performing arts venues such as The Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester and commercial companies ranging from Audi to Cathy Pacific. Taking organisations new to Chinese work through a comprehensive programme of audience development, Chinese Arts Centre works to ensure that Chinese arts remain high on their agenda.
Chinese Arts Centre enjoys an excellent track record in curating significant exhibitions and has forged important links with artists, art institutions, private galleries and collectors, nationally and internationally. Through these partnerships, Chinese Arts Centre is working to build a truly international and current perception of what Chinese arts are in the 21st century.
Chinese Arts Centre recently moved to a £2.5 Million purpose built venue in Manchester’s regenerated Northern Quarter, the city’s artistic district. The new centre occupies the ground floor and basement of a beautifully converted Victorian market hall. The building successfully links Manchester’s 19th century past as an economic powerhouse, the originator of the Industrial Revolution, and its present as a contemporary, forward thinking creative city.
Artists’ studio
Following the highly successful ‘New Commissions’ programme, Chinese Arts Centre is again proud to offer residency opportunities to artists of Chinese descent. We anticipate holding between three and four residencies a year with at least two of those being with British based Chinese artists. At least one residency will be open to an artist based outside the UK.
The aim of the studio is to give the artist freedom to create. There is no pressure on the artist to produce a finished exhibition, and the space will reflect this. The space will be malleable to the artist’s desires, and is not meant to be precious.
The artists’ studio is 30m sq. with a wooden floor and plasterboard walls. Roughly ¾ of the inner structure is available as hanging space. This will mean a greater variety of work can be accommodated within the studio. The artists’ studio also contains a lighting and a sound system. Adjoining, there is a 4m sq. basic workshop, which enables the artist to make work onsite. The resident artist has 24-hour access to the studio and adjoining it is the artist accommodation. The artist accommodation comprises a bedroom, a shared kitchen, a shower room and washing machine as well as some storage. The project space is at the front of the building next to reception and is visible from the street. It can be partially lit with natural light.

The selection process
There are a number of stages to the selection process. Initially the applications will go through a short-listing process to make sure that they are eligible for selection. If you are ineligible for whatever reason, we will contact you at this point. It may be that you have not included some information or that your idea will not work in our space.
The next stage is the panel meeting where the applications will be presented to the panel. The panel will select works based on the criteria below. The panel will aim to select 3 or 4 artists who they think will benefit most in their career by being an artist in residence.
Finally the Artist Residency Co-ordinator will contact all applicants. Selected applicants will be asked to state their preferred dates for the residency. Unsuccessful applicants will be given feedback on their application and, whenever possible, suggestions on how to develop their practice.

Criteria For Selection
The panel aims to select:
· one UK based artists at an early stage in their career
· one UK based experienced artist experimenting with new work
· one artist who is based outside of the UK
The following selection criteria will be applied to all applicants:
1. The panel will consider the relative standard and quality of the work: that is the skill applied by the artist, the idea and the perceived benefit of the residency to the artist’s career.
2. The panel is looking for original work that is innovative. It may be a new departure for the artist or present a distinctive approach within a given art-form or chosen media. The panel is looking for work that challenges boundaries within, and perceptions of visual art.
3. The panel will consider the extent to which the work will develop your practice.
4. The residencies are open to artists working in visual arts, combined and new technologies.
5. The fee and expenses available are intended for one artist. The panel will not be able consider proposals from two or more artists working together.
6. There are no set themes and the panel will consider work on any subject.
7. The artist must speak fluent English.
8. The artist must be able to create the work by themselves. Chinese Arts Centre can only offer specialist technical assistance within the materials budget.
9. The artist’s residency will be for a period of no less than one month and no more than three months.
10. It is not the aim of the residency to produce an exhibition. Instead the studio will be open to visitors by appointment, and there will be an open studio at the end of the residency if appropriate.
Chinese Arts Centre can offer resident artists the following:
1. Chinese Arts Centre will cover economy travel expenses at the beginning and end of the residency. We will pay up to £100 per month for research trips within the UK.
2. Artists will receive £20 per day to cover living expenses whilst they are resident at the Chinese Arts Centre.
3. Artists can request a materials budget of up to £1,000 during a three-month residency. For residencies under three months the budget will be pro rata (an average of £333 per month). All materials, including hire or purchase of specialised equipment that the Chinese Arts Centre does not already have, will be expected to come out of this budget.
4. The Chinese Arts Centre will pay to publicise the open studio at the end of the residency.
